What is cuttlefish bone?

Cuttlefish bone refers to the internal cartilaginous shell of the cuttlefish, a relative of the squid and octopus. This type of fish appears in oceans all over the world. The bone is typically smooth and white, with small, wavy lines or ridges.
The major component of cuttlebone is calcium carbonate, making up 85 percent of the total weight of the bone. The second biggest component is other organic materials, which makes up 8.9 percent and is mainly carbohydrate material.

What are the applications of the cuttle fish bones?

The bone is rich in minerals such as calcium and carbon. And, it also contains more than a dozen amino acids. Therefore, people have harvested and used cuttlefish bones for various purposes such as calcium supplement for birds and raw medicine for human beings. Moreover, because it has mainly calcium, it is the ideal way to supplement a birds’s calcium intake. Mostly, these bones are the main supplement of calcium and exercise toy for birds.

Basically, cuttlefish bones have a grainy texture, and reminiscent of pumice. This texture can also offer benefits to parrots as it is helpful in wearing down overgrown beaks. As a result, it’s recommended to always keep a cuttlefish bone in the bird’s cage to promote beak and jaw exercise.

In traditional medicine, cuttlefish bone has salty and warm properties, and is associated with the kidney, liver and stomach meridians. Its functions are to stop bleeding, harmonize the stomach and improve kidney deficiency. Some patients with stomach problems may take it to combat acid reflux disease and some intestinal disorders. Calcium carbonate in the bone can neutralize stomach acid, balance the pH of the stomach fluid, reduce pepsin activity, and promote the healing of ulcers.

Packing and Loading Cuttle Fish Bone for Exporting:

We usually pack cuttle fish bone in 10 kgs net carton with HDPE inner lining or in 20 – 25 kgs net PP/PE bag. However, customers can also request for your own bag design with the min order as mentioned. Normally, we are loading about 4500 kilograms per 20-foot container. Nevertheless, we can load up to 5 MTs per container.

For exporting documents, besides invoice and packing list, we provide health certificate, fumigation and certificate of origin. If you need other special certificate, please notify us in advance for checking and preparing before loading shipment on-board.


Storage conditions and self-life of the product:

  • Store in cool and dry place; keep away from high moisture area.
  • Self-life: 12 months
